Today is President's Day, which is a celebration of the birthdays of both former US presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Both presidents were born in February, and originally Washington's birthday was a federal holiday. Some states also celebrated Lincoln's birthday as a separate holiday, but it was not recognized federally.
In 1968, a law was enacted that affected several federal holidays. One of these holidays was Washington's Birthday, the observation of which was shifted to the third Monday in February each year. This law took effect in 1971, was designed to simplify the yearly calendar of holidays and give federal employees some standard three-day weekends in the process. Lucky them! :)Apparently, President's Day is still "officially" known as Washington's Birthday, but has become popularly and legally in some states, known as "President's Day."
So now the third Monday in February is a day for honoring both Washington and Lincoln, as well as all the men who have served in the office of President of the United States.
The George Washington t-shirt offers the following inspirational quote:
"If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter." - George Washington
This shirt can be viewed and purchased here.
The Abraham Lincoln tee features these words of wisdom:
"As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy." - Abraham Lincoln
You can see more styles and purchase the Abe Lincoln shirt here.
Both of these tees are available in a variety of colors, styles and sizes for men, women, teens, kids and even freedom-loving babies.
Happy Birthday Abe and George!
